my goodness we might need Design Aire Heating and Cooling at our house on Sunday and Monday uh thank you very much for joining us for Last Call this is the segment that's only on YouTube as you know and it features segments that we didn't get to in the first 30 minutes Alvin I thought the St Louis American was just splendid in its choice of Jimmy Williams uh former mayor of East St Louis who built 26 McDonald's in 26 years a tremendous businessman and you named him as the St Louis person of the year yeah a great entrepreneur great philanthropist originally for me St Louis still really really were to does so much at East St Louis uh really great guy and uh I thought we made a really good choice um I think you know one of the people I considered and I didn't make the choice by myself was um Dr Maddie Davis who is um director of the St Louis health department I know every seems like every Department in the city has had some kind of chaos which is not true but anyway boy she is on top of everything Health oriented and I'm really happy that she is in that position at this time as we head into some you know maybe questionable Health decisions coming out of the nationally how can the sports columnist for the St Louis American not pick St Louis's own Jason Tatum who won a gold medal at the Olympics and of course an NBA championship for the stored Boston Celtics I you know I just think person of the year as much as I love sports I have trouble tabbing a athlete as as a person of the year you know I I would suggest uh the departing Governor Mike Parson as the St Louis person of the year because part you know one of the huge problems in St Louis has been the criminal justice system and he put Gabe Gore in uh which was a huge improve mement over uh what the citizens had you know Kim Gardner had won reelection and Gabe Gore I had never heard talk about Gabe Gore running for the office you know there was talk about him possibly being us attorney back when people thought that Joe Biden would actually name a US attorney but Parson put Gabe Gore in and he was a complete success and now as Parson is exiting he's picked Melissa price Smith to replace Wesley Bell and I think that she's going to be an upgrade there so while I've had a lot of uh disagreements and problems with Mike Parson I think that he has done the St Louis area a big favor in the criminal justice system so I actually have to piggyback on Bill's choice because my choice was going to be Gabe Gore um and you made a very compelling case for why I think it's interesting there are actually some parallels between Gabe Gore and the person that Sam page nominated who didn't end up getting the County prosecutor's job now that Mike Parson has gotten his way you know he came into this system with I don't believe any experience as a County prosecutor he had been a federal assistant us attorney but not even that long he was more known for his work in private practice um he came into this job and inherited this office that was just demolished there were I think two or three prosecutors left at the point that he took over this in a city with 160 murders a year I mean that's appalling he managed to turn this thing around and he actually made it look easy you know so he came in with I think a pretty steep learning curve good lawyer not necessarily a lawyer well versed in this system managed to turn this around and he's also one of the few public officials I can point to in St Louis right now who doesn't seem to be interested in suing other public officials they're always turning on each other he's just doing his job hasn't the reporting uh at your news outlets indicated that it was David Stewart the chairman of worldwide Technologies who came up with the idea for Gabe Gore well G like I say G Gabe Gore had been he and Reggie Harris were the two names that everybody talked about for uh being possible us attorney so uh Mr Stewart didn't like invent Gabe Gore out a whole cloth people were saying that this this young man is going to be somebody and so yeah he he may have gotten Parson's year but the legal Community was already he was on the short list for all sorts of things he was our person of the year last year g g well he he deserves it two years my uh my person of the year is not so much for what uh she did because it was negative it was what she created and that's farmer school superintendent Kesha scarlet and I think what she did which was basically exposed unwillingly except for the reporting of ble Bernard from our newspaper exposed the absolute shameful spending that a struggling School District was doing and it created more and more stories and I think it finally got people to say let's quit waxing poetic about education and look at what specifically has been happening in the St Louis Public Schools and find out going from a what was it a 30 million surplus to a 10 million deficit wanting more of Ram's money and then finding out we were going to hire somebody part-time basically pay him 150 170,000 a year and let him still live in Texas so I believe her outrageous behavior as superintendent has caused a lot of people in St Louis not only to question School spending but then when things are coming up on the St Louis Development Corporation sldc I think there's a lot of people going wait a minute this is crazy we need to take a closer look at that so even though she didn't want to be that's why Kesha Scarlet would be my person of the year Well I wouldn't give her person of the year because I think through those credit cards you already got enough from the local area but uh that that's an interesting uh Choice Joe I'm going to pick a Kirk woodan sorry Elvin you came in second place that's all right and I'm interested to who pick I'm picking Nikki Glazer oh okay Nikki Glazer was profiled a huge piece in uh the weekend's Wall Street Journal but last year she just was on fire on Netflix and on HBO and she's kind of one in comedy circles the Talk of the Nation and on Sunday the 5th she's going to be the first female to solo host the Golden Globe Awards uh which is a huge distinction and she still lives in the St Louis area I think it's Kirkwood I'm not Liv in the city she lives she lives in the Central West End Central West End uh I guess uh congratulations to her for all her success but it's kind of neat that she is remaining local so and on March 1st she'll be inducted into the Kirkwood High School Hall of Fame ela's going in oh somebody close to me that's right you are getting in I hope she I hope she's there I would like to meet her I've never met I hope she's there I do have a runner up too okay on mine um I think chief Robert Tracy has done an outstanding job with the St Louis Police Department the uh homicide rate is down the crime rate is down you if if Les Sturman in the gang don't want to believe it that's fine with me but I think he's doing a a very good job in a difficult situation and I applaud him I would also throw in Jerry schlicker who I don't think gets enough attention here's a St Louis attorney who's been working with the immigrants to our area he started the uh soccer field for Afghan immigrants and Afghan chamber of Commerce he started a newsletter but before that he's the guy who started that incubator for tech companies on Washington Avenue the name of which Escapes Me T-Rex T-Rex that's right uh and uh then he also he also started the uh historic tax credit program so we could get more residential housing in downtown St Louis what a great idea exactly he wrote the law on that one he write Bang a Gong enough out of you as Martin duanwood said thank you so much why don't you send us your ideas for the St Louis person of the year and we'll read your letters next week on our program thank you and have a great week Happy New Year
